The annual Berlin Conference by Stiftung Zukunft Berlin took place from November 7 to November 9, 2021. The conference took off with a visit to Chemnitz, European Capital of Culture 2025. On the following days, the conference continued in Berlin at Allianz Forum, Pariser Platz. The conference was supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
Participants from various countries included Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, President of the European Committee of the Regions, current and former members of the European Parliament, government representatives, mayors, distinguished representatives from academia and initatives throughout Europe. On behalf of the Association for Interactive Democracy, Andreas Nitsche was an invited speaker in the Second Plenary Session: The Platform “Europe Bottom-Up”.
The Berlin Conference was followed by the “State of Europe” speech, a regular annual statement by one of Europe’s most senior representatives–the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Parliament or the President of the European Court of Justice–on the idea and current state of Europe. The State of Europe Speech 2021 by Charles Michel, President of the European Council was organized in cooperation between Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator, and Stiftung Zukunft Berlin.
